FREE Beginner Social Dance Lessons

Come learn to dance and meet new people!

Tuesdays or Thursdays, 8:30-9:30pm, Talley Student Center Ballroom

Membership in our club is as easy as coming to one of our weekly beginner lessons. Beginner social dance lessons are held on Tuesdays or Thursdays throughout the academic year (see schedule, approximately every other week). The lessons are open to both students and community members. No partner is necessary, but we encourage you to bring along your friends. Just come on time (or a little early) wearing casual clothing (no need to get all dressed up). If your shoes mark the floor, you will be asked to take them off. If you're uncertain, bring your shoes and a pair of socks (lots of people wear just socks on the floor - no bare feet please). In any case, we'll get you dancing!!!

What do you do when you come to a social dance lesson? The first thing to do is to check in at the front table. There will be someone there to help you check in. After checking in, it's time to get on the floor!

The dances that we may teach are social dances (Swing, Salsa, Merengue, Polka, and Hustle), latin dances (Rumba, Cha Cha, Samba, Jive, and Paso Doble), and standard dances (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz).

These lessons will teach you what you need to know in order to dance socially at parties, weddings, formals, and other events. We will teach you the basic steps of several dances, how to lead and follow, and even some advanced figures. See the calendar for the schedule. Free beginner social dance lessons are on either a Tuesday or Thursday most weeks during the academic year in the Talley Student Center Ballroom (2nd floor) from 8:30 to 9:30pm. On the calendar, these lessons can be distinguished by the FREE prefix.

Tid-bits. Ballroom Dance is an officially recognized sport by the International Olympic Committee. According to the Einstein Aging Study, ballroom dance helps prevent dementia. Competitive dancing at the higher levels has been shown to be as physically demanding as basketball, squash, and cross-country running.

Since you will be dancing in close proximity to a partner, please be sure to wear anti-perspirant/deodorant.

If you are interested in learning to dance beyond a "3 week wonder" level, consider joining our team. For information, click the TEAM link at the top of the page.
